About the Office of Development

Mission:The Office of Development carries out the vital task of raising and stewarding philanthropic gifts to support the National Academies. We foster lifelong partnerships by inspiring engagement, matching donor passions, and mobilizing inclusive opportunities to fulfill our mission of providing evidence-based advice to the nation.

Vision: We seek to build a culture of philanthropy across the National Academies.

You Make a Difference

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are independent, non-profit organizations whose work relies on support from generous individuals, foundations, businesses, government, and other organizations. Philanthropy underpins our essential mission: to provide independent, trustworthy advice and facilitate solutions to complex challenges by mobilizing expertise, practice, and knowledge in science, engineering, and medicine.

Your support fosters innovation, inspires action around shared priorities, and enriches the careers of outstanding science professionals. The truths that science provides are more important than ever to spark progress and ensure prosperity, security, and well-being for our nation and the world.

"Thanks to the philanthropic partnership of our members, friends, and sponsors, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine can provide independent, evidence-based guidance on many critical challenges facing the U.S. and the world. Our partners are increasingly vital as large-scale, complex issues such as climate change, advancing racial equity, and ensuring an inclusive COVID-19 pandemic recovery that benefits all Americans rise to the forefront of the national conversation. Together with your support, science, engineering, and medicine are delivering timely advice and spurring progress on key national priorities and building a more robust, resilient nation and world."

Corporate and Foundation Relations

Although many of our activities are requested and funded by Congress and federal agencies, we do not receive direct appropriations from the federal government. Foundations, the private sector, and philanthropy from individuals enable us to address critical issues on behalf of the nation. For more information about corporate and foundation support, contact Alison Purvis, Chief Development Officer at APurvis@nas.edu.
