Effective April 8, 2022

All facilities of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are open.

To prevent infection and spread of the COVID-19 virus, and as an integral measure toward the safety and health of everyone in our buildings, the National Academies require all individuals who enter our facilities to be up to date with their vaccinations against COVID-19 per CDC guidance. Visitors may choose to wear a mask or respirator but are not required to do so.

Guidance for Our Buildings

All visitors to National Academies facilities — including volunteers, Academy members, invited guests, fellows, sponsors, presenters, vendors, contractors, consultants, temporary workers, and other non-staff — must be up to date with their vaccinations against COVID-19 per CDC guidance.

Visitors must show their official COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card (or a digital photo of the card) to the security staff at the Keck Center or the NAS Building, or to the management staff at the Beckman Center, when they enter the facility. A visitor’s vaccination information will not be recorded or stored by the National Academies; the information will simply be verified to allow them to access the facility. Anyone who fails to present a vaccination card (or its copy) will not be allowed access to our facility; no exemptions or exceptions will be accommodated. Children under the age of 6 months are currently ineligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, but may still enter National Academies’ facilities.

Additional Information for Employees

Beginning March 10, 2022, all employees must be up to date with their vaccinations against COVID-19 per CDC guidance, unless they have an approved medical or religious accommodation. Staff are required to have a current version of their vaccination card uploaded to Workday. Staff with a medical or religious accommodation will be provided with further guidance by the Office of Human Resources.

It is important to have a complete record of who is in a building for contact tracing. Therefore, staff must scan ID badges at a badge reader when entering a facility, and may not bypass the tracking system by entering the building on someone else’s ID badge.

Staff may enter facilities without prior authorization.

What We Are Doing to Keep You and Others Safe

  • Ensure building ventilation meets or exceeds air quality standards
  • Clean shared work surfaces to CDC standards for viral mitigation
  • Provide masks at every building entrance
  • Provide hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes in all high-touch areas
  • Ensure staff and visitors are vaccinated against COVID-19

What You Can Do to Keep Yourself and Others Safe

  • Be up to date on your vaccinations and upload your current record to Workday
  • Self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms
  • Stay home, or go home, if you’re not feeling well
  • Wearing a mask or respirator is not a requirement, but anyone who chooses to wear one should feel free and comfortable to do so.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Keep your hands clean
We use MERV 13 filters – the highest grade compatible with our HVAC units, and we have set our outdoor air vents to 100% open.  Even though at present our buildings are lightly occupied the ventilation rates are designed for full occupancy – so we have excess ventilation capacity.  Our facilities crew rigorously checks and maintains the units so they are always rated in top condition during our annual UL Indoor Air Quality inspection.

The National Academies’ COVID-19 Response

The National Academies’ leadership is closely monitoring the evolving situation related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and we are basing our approach to National Academies’ business on the current scientific evidence on COVID-19 and the best public health advice. Our priority is the safety of our staff and our larger community of volunteers, sponsors, and members.
