From more extreme weather to rising seas, the climate is changing in ways that pose increasing risks to people and ecosystems. Building on decades of work, the National Academies continue to provide objective advice from top experts to help the nation better understand, prepare for, and limit future climate change.
Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States
CO2 is the largest driver of climate change and the greenhouse gas most intimately integrated into the U.S. economy and way of life. This study committee will examine the status of technologies, policies, and societal factors needed for decarbonization and recommend research and policy needs, focused on the near and midterm (5-20 years).
Environmental Health Matters Initiative
From the air we breathe to the water we drink, our health is defined by our natural environment. Environmental health issues like air and water pollution affect everything from our quality of life to the prevalence of certain illnesses. This initiative brings together leaders from various sectors to share their insights on how to solve our most pressing environmental health challenges.
This study committee will develop a detailed trans-disciplinary research agenda and recommend research governance approaches for climate intervention strategies that reflect sunlight to cool Earth, addressing research needs and relevant research governance in tandem.
